Silvia Puentes Q&A
Pilates & Healing
1. What are the most common injuries that the Pilates method rehabilitates?.
“For most ailments or injuries, the best treatment is movement in a healthy and safe way. That is why the Pilates method is one of the most suitable disciplines in these cases. Lifestyle and postural habits often lead to lower back or cervical pain, herniated discs, joint degeneration or discopathies, radiculopathies, shoulder, hip or knee pathologies. Pilates works on body alignment to remove pressures and loads in injured areas and is effective for short-term improvement and prevention”.”
2. Which of the more unknown ailments have a good response with Pilates?
“Complex pathologies such as fibromyalgia or chronic pain syndrome, or neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis or stroke, have symptoms or sequelae that improve with the regular practice of the Pilates method”.”
3. Which devices of the method are specifically designed to support rehabilitation?
“All the apparatus of the Pilates method is designed to work on the body as a whole, using force from the centre of energy - from which all movement starts - to the more distal parts where it ends in a precise and controlled way. But there are two devices: the foot corrector and the toe exerciser that work the foot specifically. The foot corrector focuses on aligning, balancing and strengthening the ankle joint and the sole of the foot. The toe exerciser is designed to work the intrinsic musculature of the foot and toes, to correct their alignment and to gain dexterity and sensitivity in their movement with respect to the foot as a whole”.”
4. Which apparatus did Joseph H. Pilates create for the rehabilitation of specific cases?
“A perfect example is the Pedi pole. Specifically designed by Joseph h. Pilates in the 1930s for the mezzo soprano Rise Stevens, one of his clients. Her aim was to improve her singing technique by working to increase her lung capacity. Another example is the Baby Chair, designed to work with children, or the magic circle, which Joseph often used with opera singers and dancers”.”
5. What are the most common ailments treated at Elite Pilates?.
“At Elite Pilates we meet many clients every day who come to us with lower back or neck pain, to which are usually added episodes of pain in other areas, due to decompensation caused by the main pain, or a history of pain in the hips, knees or shoulders.
