Pilates & Powerhouse
In Pilates we call powerhouse or energy centre to a wide area, which extends from the lower line of the ribs to the lower line of the hip, as an active belt. Here we find muscles that envelop the entire abdominal region up to the lumbar vertebrae, including the muscles that encompass the hips and pelvis with the pelvic floor as a base. It is the area responsible for maintaining balance and posture for any action and movement. When we move, or even in anticipation of the movement, the muscles of our powerhouse are activated without us being aware of it, stabilising and keeping the body in balance to perform the action we want, and it is then when the superficial muscles perform the complete movement.
In Pilates all exercises must be performed around this energy centre. The strength of the centre will be in charge of initiating and controlling the movement of the parts of the body that, depending on the exercise, we aim to move, giving stability to other areas of the body that in this case carry out support work. In this way we will work all the muscle chains that will start from this central area in a symmetrical way on both sides of the body, enhancing its functionality and ergonomics. At the same time, if we already have ailments or injuries to rehabilitate, the work from the strength of the energy centre will provide tone to the deep musculature, which will stabilise the joints, removing pressure and balancing the forces necessary to improve the injured structure. This strength will be transmitted to the superficial musculature, more dynamic, in charge of carrying out the complete and wide movement. A clear example is our spine. By strengthening the deep musculature that joins and stabilises our vertebrae, we will be able to maintain a correct posture that allows us to better combat muscle fatigue, avoiding pain in the neck, back, or other joints. Let us teach you how to strengthen your powerhouse for a healthy body.
