Lung & Pilates
Today, the 17th, International Lung Cancer Day, we remember the breathing work that Pilates promotes.
Lung cancer is considered the leading cause of cancer death in men and women. 50% of cases are detected late. Active (high-risk factor) and passive smoking; exposure to certain substances in the workplace, such as tar, arsenic or soot, or to certain radiation; a history of lung cancer; and air pollution all increase the risk of developing lung cancer. Some of its main symptoms, in addition to pain and weakness, are fatigue and a feeling of breathlessness or dyspnoea, which reduce physical capacity. For this reason, good respiratory work is vital for rehabilitation.
Exercising safely before, during and after treatment for such a process improves quality of life and increases energy and motivation, helping to cope with side effects.
The Pilates method, being a complete training discipline, incorporates breathing as one of its pillars. It helps to perform a global cardiopulmonary and muscular exercise with an infinite number of exercises that combine multiple functional body actions in all possible positions, working the lungs inside the rib cage. It also includes arm and spine movements in all their possibilities, allowing to ventilate and increase lung capacity.
In Pilates, breathing is done through the nose, so that the air enters the lungs cleaner and with the right temperature and humidity. This air is taken to the middle part of the lungs, expanding the lateral and posterior intercostal muscles, in order to use all the muscles of the thorax and back, while lengthening the spine. These are long, deep breaths that allow maximum expansion of the lungs to fill them with oxygen. Practising conscious breathing that is coordinated with movement helps to direct attention and strength to the objective to be worked on. In addition to exercising concentration and enhancing the control of each action of the body, favouring a proper posture. Correct breathing is essential for health. In this way, circulation, oxygenation and the supply of nutrients to the tissues, muscles and organs will be favoured, bringing vitality to the body and mind.
