This week we look at how the physiotherapy can be a great ally in the postoperative period after prostate cancer. Our teacher Claudia Calás, a graduate in Physiotherapy and Master in rehabilitation for pelvic floor dysfunctions from the University of San Jorge, responds. “Prostate cancer is a disease whose treatment often involves surgery. After surgery, it is crucial to address various aspects of recovery. One of the most beneficial therapeutic approaches is male pelvic floor physiotherapy, which plays a key role in the patient's quality of life and overall recovery.
What is male pelvic floor physiotherapy?
Prostate cancer is treated by prostatectomy (surgery to remove the prostate), the most common side effect of which is pelvic floor dysfunction. Such surgery often triggers urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. This is when pelvic floor physiotherapy becomes an invaluable resource with three main objectives to address.
Main objectives of physiotherapy
- Reduction of urinary incontinence. It works with patients to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, thereby improving bladder control and reducing incontinence. Kegel exercises are an integral part of this process.
- Rehabilitation of erectile function. Physiotherapy may include techniques that improve blood flow, strengthen related muscles and promote recovery of erectile function.
- Improved mobility and flexibility. Full recovery after surgery also involves restoring mobility and flexibility. In this way, personalised exercise programmes are developed that address both specific pelvic floor problems and promote holistic rehabilitation for a better quality of life.

It is crucial that patients and medical professionals recognise the importance of integrating pelvic floor physiotherapy into the postoperative treatment plan to maximise results and achieve a full recovery.
