Pilates: The intelligent look

Learn about the importance of directing your gaze properly in order to achieve a correct head and neck posture. There is a direct relationship between gaze and posture.

On many occasions, and involuntarily, the movement of the head (skull) is misaligned with the physiological position of the neck, incorrectly distributing its load and unbalancing its actions. This causes overloading of a musculature that is not prepared for it and leads to pressure on structures that can end up injuring themselves and causing: neck pain, headaches, dizziness, nerve compressions, muscle fatigue or contractures due to tension in the back.

For this reason, in the Pilates method, the positioning of the gaze with respect to our skull and the skull with respect to our neck is a fundamental factor, which favours the control of the alignment of the body in a coordinated, symmetrical and simultaneous way.

From the beginning and during the course of each exercise, the gaze helps to maintain the correct position of our head with the cervical and with the rest of the spine and limbs. In this way, the movement is directed with our centre of energy, avoiding forced positions and working on correct muscular and joint alignment and balance.

The correct cervical position in Pilates seeks balance with the minimum muscular effort, reducing tension and lengthening the entire suboccipital area. It also strengthens the flexor muscles of the head and all the internal muscles of the neck that will stabilise the vertebrae, helping those muscles that lead to the shoulders and the dorsal and lumbar area, which often suffer from discomfort due to overexertion.

Bringing the gaze at each precise moment to where each exercise of the Pilates method requires us, correctly positions the skull, the cervical and the rest of the spine, and is also a consequence of maximum concentration, which helps to become aware of the position and movement in space, for greater efficiency and control in all its execution.
