Column versus youth

We tell you how their flexibility is the key.

The spinal column is perhaps the body structure that, due to the evolution of the human being, has experienced more demands. From its support on the four limbs to the bipedal position, on two legs. This evolution has caused it to adapt through a series of morphological changes with a different anatomical position, accentuating its curves to cushion impacts from the ground.
Involuntary factors such as genetics, morphology, age or gender influence its configuration. However, we can influence other aspects that condition the health of the spine throughout life. Postural imbalances due to muscle weakness, accentuated deviations and stiffness, lack of mobility and flexibility are the most frequent causes of the spine not being able to support the load on the joints and ligaments and ending up strained when carrying out its functions. Therefore, keeping the spinal musculature and joint structures strong - with their proper range of motion, stable and flexible - allows them to withstand this stress even when subjected to excessive pressure caused by poor gestures and/or posture.

The practice of the Pilates method provides a comprehensive workout with exercises whose objectives focus on the mobility and flexibility of the spine, paying special attention to those areas which, in each particular case, are more rigid and weak. In these areas the muscles will increase their blood flow, tone up and lengthen, extending the range of movement of the spine and improving its wellbeing.

Many of the gestures of everyday life, such as: turning around looking backwards, bending down to put on shoes, trying to pick up an object far above the head, or simply a sporting activity that requires running or jumping, are some examples in which it can be compromised and will respond better if it is worked with a training system that strengthens it and makes it more flexible. A spine with its physiological curves and vertebral discs preserved, correctly aligned, articulated, stable and strong, is fundamental for the communication between the nervous system and all the body structures to develop normally. In this way, the necessary control and coordination is acquired, which helps to preserve its youthfulness.
