It is very common to find people comparing them or thinking that they are almost the same. But, although they have some things in common, it is true that we also find disparity in many aspects, which confirms the uniqueness of each of them. Therefore, in this article from Élite Pilates we tell you what the main similarities and differences are. differences between yoga and pilates so that you can understand which one suits you best. For, out of context, neither is better than the other on its own.

What are the differences between yoga and pilates?

  1. Yoga is an ancient technique, The Indian tea, which is more than 4000 years old, is a native of India. On the other hand, the Pilates method is much more recent. It was born in the 20th century and its creator, Joseph Pilates, was inspired by yoga, among other techniques, to develop his exercise system.
  2. The Pilates method is practised with apparatus and mats, while yoga only makes use of a mat. Some support tools such as belts or blocks may also be used, but no devices are used.
  3. The yoga is more “static”, The different postures are maintained for a certain period of time. However, the Pilates is all about constant movement
  4. Breathing in Pilates is always directed towards the rib cage, trying to expand the lungs and thus allowing the navel to be drawn inwards and upwards, whereas in Yoga there are many types of breathing.
  5. Although the Pilates method encompasses body, mind and spirit, this one is more aimed at controlling the body through the mind and does not work on the level of meditation, as opposed to in the yoga, where we could say that spiritual work is the fundamental pillar of its practice.

What are the similarities between yoga and Pilates?

  1. The concentration during practice of both disciplines is fundamental, as it connects the mind with the body. In both cases, this helps to work from body awareness, helping to direct and execute the movements correctly and thus generating a greater benefit.
  2. The work on strength and flexibility is present in both disciplines. At the muscular level, both are necessary for proper function. Therefore, we should not only focus on strengthening our muscles, but also on keeping them flexible. In this way we will be able to release tension and avoid shortening, which can put pressure on the joints and lead to unwanted compensations and injuries in the future.
  3. In both cases the body is worked on as a whole. This holistic working vision is fundamental to help restore normal structure and movement. Our whole body is connected, so some parts influence others. Therefore, this approach considering the body as a whole will benefit you to be able to perform correctly not only during the practice of the exercises in both disciplines, but also during the day to day.
  4. Both help to correct our posture, The new method is a way of bringing a greater awareness of our body.
  5. Both are two disciplines that avoid impact, This strengthens the body at all times, preventing the structure from suffering aggressions that in the future could cause injury due to muscle overload, wear and tear of our joints or the wear and tear or breakage of their protective elements such as cartilage, menisci, intervertebral discs, etc.

In conclusion, we could say that, despite the fact that they are two different physical disciplines, both can bring great benefits through their practice, since, in addition to help us to strengthen and make more flexible, help us to improving posture becoming aware of our body. This means that they can be practised even when there are injuries or ailments, although we always recommend that in these cases the work is individualised and that you first consult a professional who can advise you correctly based on your needs.
