Healing & Pilates

Today, on the 19th, World Breast Cancer Day, we show you how Pilates can be an ideal complement to recovery.

The benefits of the method are innumerable, also in breast cancer processes. One of the situations that occurs is mastectomy, the removal of the breast and breast tissue, which may include nearby tissues or lymph nodes and has physical and psycho-emotional consequences.

Reducing pain; reducing fatigue, anxiety and/or depression; improving range of motion, cardiopulmonary and other visceral functions; strengthening the immune system; increasing and balancing muscle tone; and improving sleep quality and self-esteem become priority goals for a full recovery.

Pilates, being low impact, is one of the best options to start a safe physical activity.

Another fundamental aspect of the method is its ability to adapt to any physical condition the person may be in, both during the process and after an operation of this type. In each session, the exercises can be modified by adjusting the intensity and load of the training, being very meticulous with the level of fatigue or pain and always taking into account the after-effects or possible side effects of the treatment. This guarantees that we can exercise the affected area safely and effectively, including it in the overall body function, improving the decompensations caused by overuse or bad positions and misalignments, especially of the shoulder, neck or thorax. In this way, the mobility of the entire rib cage and shoulder girdle is promoted.

With mastectomy, the range of movement of these areas together with the ribs and the shoulder blade is greatly compromised, and with them, the shoulder joint. By strengthening the muscles of the upper and middle back, the back of the shoulder girdle and the shoulder, Pilates exercises work on the elasticity of the structures that are shortened by adhesions and scarring in the rib, axillary or pectoral area. The muscular chains are also balanced, thus improving posture. This, together with the deep breathing work, which exercises the intercostal muscles, increases the thoracic diameter, eliminating tensions, promoting blood circulation and lymphatic drainage throughout the affected area, thus preventing lymphoedema.
