Spine in shape

The work of the Pilates method in your care

The spinal column is made up of a set of vertebrae that articulate with each other, giving it support, stability, mobility and, due to the shape of its natural curves, providing cushioning both in our “standing” position and during locomotion.

Our day-to-day activities tend to “take their toll” on the body. back musculature and to the spinal column, either due to our sedentary lifestyles, excess stress, the burden of weights, sitting for long hours in front of the computer, standing for long periods of time, or to lack of exercise.

What are the most common ailments?

It is very common that due to weakness in some structures of the spine, lack of tone in the muscles or bad postural habits, the spinal cord can become weak. curvatures of the spine The most common are dehydration or disc degeneration, disc protrusion or herniation, muscle contractures, osteoarthritis or nerve impingement. Among the most common are dehydration or disc degeneration, disc protrusion or hernia, muscle contractures, osteoarthritis or nerve impingement.

Another of the problems we regularly encounter is the scoliosis, which consists of a pathological misalignment of the spine in the frontal plane maintained by a muscular imbalance, which in the long run will also have negative repercussions on the rest of our body as a result of different compensations.

All of these ailments are usually accompanied by symptomatology in the form of discomfort or pain, This makes it difficult in many cases to function in our daily lives in a natural way, which limits the body's functionality and ends up generating secondary injuries at other levels.

What are the benefits of practising the Pilates method?

El pilates method can correct or improve spinal disorders aligning, strengthening and flexibilising to maintain good body functionality, thus preventing future problems caused by overexertion, bad posture, physical demands or lack of training. With its practice we achieve:

Improving alignment

The body awareness that the method provides us with the key to improving those postural habits that generate imbalances, misalignments and discomfort and that can lead to spinal pathologies. By maintaining a healthy spine, our vertebrae, intervertebral discs, ligaments and spaces through which the nerve roots pass will be free of any pressure and irritation that can cause pain and injury.

Muscle strengthening

The work of our energy centre stabilises our spine and, at the same time, works on its mobility and flexibility, relieving pressure in areas such as the lumbar or cervical spine, which are usually more affected.

On the other hand, it will also be essential to work on the deep muscles of the spine. For this, the Pilates method focuses on working “vertebra by vertebra” with the aim of restoring the correct mobility to each of the vertebral levels and strengthening the internal musculature.

Work on flexibility

Most people have one or more of the following rigid zones in your spine, which causes a lack of mobility. As a result, it will suffer from higher overhead in the free areas, where it will cause more wear and tear and eventually injury.

The Pilates method has many exercises that help us to make the spine more flexible in order to improve the action of our muscles, avoid their shortening, improve the mobility of our joints and avoid the generation of internal pressure. In this way we will manage to balance each of our vertebral levels so that they work correctly and we will avoid the appearance of ailments in the future.

As I said Joseph Pilates, “You are as young or as old as your spine is. If your back is stiff at 30, then you're old. But if you can make it mobile and flexible at 60, then you'll stay young¨.
