Pilates. Alignment and Symmetry.

For a functional and balanced body, it is a priority to exercise from a correct skeletal alignment. In this way we will ensure proper mechanics at a muscular level, guaranteeing more efficient movement, with less effort and avoiding early wear and tear of muscles, ligaments and joints.

The physical stress of certain tasks or activities, poor posture sustained over long periods of time, trauma and falls, and even surgery can cause weakness in certain areas of the body, affecting good alignment.

During the practice of the Pilates method it is essential to monitor the alignment and be aware of the position. Even before performing an exercise, it is corrected and checked, so that all our body structures keep both sides symmetrical in their subsequent execution. An ideal alignment of the spine, with its physiological curves, facilitates the correct functioning of the nervous system and the internal organs. In spinal deviations, such as scoliosis or dorsal hyperkyphosis, muscular decompensation hinders the expansion of certain areas of the rib cage, affecting pulmonary ventilation or even the abdominal area, which has repercussions on the digestive system.

When we are in a static position it is important to take into account how some of the body's reference points will act during the movement, such as: head and neck; shoulders; ribs; hips and pelvis; knees and ankles; and feet. This postural hygiene that is worked on with the Pilates method allows us to become aware of these positions and symmetrical movements in an increasingly automatic way, in order to be able to apply them in our daily life, thus being able to correct harmful postural habits.

It also helps to improve the positioning and functioning of our internal organs and the circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems. With constant and rigorous training, the muscles are balanced from the strength of the energy centre towards the periphery, strengthening the weaker muscles and lengthening those that need elasticity, thus reducing the pressure in overloaded areas. In this way, greater mobility and flexibility is achieved throughout the spine, greatly reducing the stiffness of the whole body.
