One of the main characteristics of the Pilates method is the use of equipment designed exclusively to achieve a dynamic training and an exquisite execution of functional movements that work our body efficiently. These apparatuses are designed with a series of springs that help us to feel a much deeper work and put the internal musculature to work, which on many occasions other sports disciplines do not manage to exercise and which is essential to maintain our physical wellbeing at any time and in any activity. In many movements, this apparatus will serve as a guide and will assist us in carrying out the movement we want to do. At the same time, and performing the opposite movement or retaining the same movement when returning to the starting position, these springs will offer us a resistance that we will have to handle with our own strength, with the control required for its correct execution. In this way we not only strengthen our muscles, but also our tendons, which tend to receive a lot of pressure when certain structures are weak or when they suffer impacts on a daily basis. Therefore, the practice of Pilates provides stability to the joints as well as flexibility and a more elongated musculature. This elongation also provides more power, more resistance and even speed. Another important factor to take into account in the Pilates method is the force of gravity. Many movements are performed precisely by resisting this force, which makes us even more aware of the work we get with our muscles. This work is done by controlling the movement from our energy centre. In this centre is where our own centre of gravity is located, which receives forces from the outside and from the inside and which have to be balanced in order to maintain a correct visceral and postural support, as well as stabilising the lumbar area and the pelvis. This centre of gravity will move according to the position or posture that we acquire, losing its balance when there is a decompensation of forces and therefore losing stability in areas that end up suffering injuries, such as the lumbar spine. With the Pilates method we learn to use this energy centre or core, the place where all the forces will go to the rest of the body, always from the inside out, and we will train it in such a way that the body will always be prepared to receive any force that destabilises it and puts weak structures at risk, exposed to suffering injuries. If you want to try out what these opposing forces mean and discover how to strengthen your energy centre or core to move with fluidity and control, give us a call.
