A sprained ankle is an injury to the ligaments that support the ankle.
A sprained ankle occurs when the ligaments that support the joint are stretched beyond their capacity or torn. Depending on the severity, sprains are classified into three grades:
- Grade I: Mild strain
- Grade II: Partial tear
- Grade III: Complete tear
Symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and, in severe cases, joint effusion and functional impairment.
Los síntomas de un esguince de tobillo incluyen dolor, hinchazón, hematomas, e imposibilidad de mover la articulación.
Depending on their severity, we will find: pain, swelling, bruising, joint effusion, and functional incapacity and limitation. A poorly healed sprain will result in residual pain and generate chronic instability towards the movement that caused the sprain, possibly leading to more episodes of this type over time. As a consequence, a series of imbalances and misalignments will occur in the body: the way you walk, carry yourself, and perform daily activities and/or play sports will change. It can also cause pain or injuries in other parts of the body, such as knee or hip dysfunction, lower back pain, or neck pain.
Initial treatments
For the first few days post-injury, recommended steps include:
- Rest, to avoid further damage
- Application of ice, to reduce inflammation
- Compression, using an elastic bandage
- Elevation of the foot, to reduce oedema
Pilates can help you recover from an ankle sprain by strengthening the muscles around your ankle and improving your balance and proprioception (your body's sense of where it is in space).
The Pilates method helps from the outset to continue working the rest of the body, adapting the exercises and taking load off the ankle while reintegrating its recovery into overall body function. We will work on the realignment of your structures and the strengthening of the musculature that stabilises the ankle joint and connects it to the knee and hip joints, so that they work correctly as a chain. We will also insist on good body awareness and balance work to promote the correct placement of the foot. This will provide you with the necessary skills to react correctly and be protected by your own strength in the event of any future impact.
