Doctor María José Martínez Caballero, creator of the natural cosmetics line “Archangela” - a cult beauty brand, a favourite of the beauty editors of fashion magazines - tells us how to prepare our skin for the cold winter temperatures.
Expert opinion.
“The preparation of our skin for the cold must be seen from the inside of the organism, of which our skin is a part. The epidermis is the organ through which our body relates to the external environment.
To look our best, it is important to take care of ourselves first and foremost from the inside. During winter the days are shorter, there is less light and the whole atmosphere encourages us to enjoy the comfort of our home. This appetising situation has its downside for our dermis. It is common for certain negative aspects to appear or be accentuated, such as dry skin and mucous membranes, tightness, redness or lack of luminosity. All of this is due to the sudden change in temperature, lack of humidity, excessive heating or the reduction in water consumption because we do not feel a pressing need to drink.
Here are 7 essential tips:
1.- We should remember to eat warmer foods such as broths, soups or stews. Also infusions to provide internal warmth, with cinnamon, red fruits, cardamom or lemon.
2.- The diet should include fruit (red fruits full of antioxidants, pomegranate, etc.), vegetables and foods rich in omega 3 and 6, such as nuts, fish, avocado and olive oil, among others.
3.- Grains and seeds (legumes, raw oleaginous fruits such as walnuts, almonds, etc.) provide us with minerals and lipids that nourish our skin and protect it from the environment.
4.- Be careful with heaters, very high temperatures should be avoided. And it is necessary to drink plenty of fluids, even hot drinks, even if the sensation of thirst is not as pressing as in summer.
5.- Intestinal health is very important for general health and the immune system. If our intestinal permeability is increased, inflammatory phenomena or alterations in our defence system occur. Moreover, the organ that often reflects this is our skin. With an adequate supply of intestinal bacilli and a well-functioning gut, we can prevent endotoxins from entering the bloodstream from our digestive mucosa and undermining our immune system.
6.- Minerals such as zinc - present in almonds, oat flakes, pumpkin seeds, fish, whole grains and eggs - protect our skin cells and participate in the immune response. Selenium is also an antioxidant mineral that prevents cellular ageing. You can find it in: nuts, garlic, cucumber, beans, mushrooms, fish and shellfish.
7.- Remember that sun protection all year round is one of the secrets of Japanese beauty. And if you want a “low cost” homemade mask to nourish and repair any skin, take note of the following recipe. Make an infusion of rosemary and lime blossom, add a good splash of almond oil or Archangela's “Queen's Beauty Oil” and a little honey. Mix well with pink clay or green clay for oily skin. Apply the mixture to the face, wait 10/15 minutes and rinse with lukewarm water”.
