Herniated discs

Herniated discs are unfortunately very common injuries in our society. All of us are susceptible to them throughout our lives just because we have moved from being on all fours to standing upright. That's why in this article we briefly tell you some important aspects about them and reveal our secret to get the best results.

Most common causes and risk factors

Generally, with the exception of cases where trauma is received, the causes that lead to injury will be directly related to your posture, alignment, mobility and the strength and flexibility of your spinal musculature.

On the other hand, as for the factors that can influence our discs by degenerating them more quickly, we could name some that we cannot avoid, such as age. But others, such as obesity and a sedentary lifestyle, certain activities we carry out in our daily lives or the practice of certain physical disciplines that cause pressure, should be corrected in order to avoid injury or, if it already exists, to prevent further degeneration.

3 key factors to prevent disc degeneration:

  1. Alignment: Correct alignment allows for a correct distribution of forces and therefore a correct distribution of the loads supported on each of the vertebral segments of our spine.
  2. Our musculature: If the muscles of our spine and our abdominal area are in optimal condition, they will be able to react to the efforts we make, protecting our joints.
  3. Mobility: essential to provide functionality to each of our vertebrae independently, as well as a general functionality of the spine.

What can we do?

The treatment will depend on the stage you are in and your symptoms. But regardless of this, the ideal will be to work with a combined treatment where we apply:

  1. Physiotherapy: This will be focused on reducing pain and inflammation using different manual techniques and different equipment. It is very important to go to your physiotherapist to be assessed and choose the most appropriate treatment, which may vary in each case.
  2. Pilates method: Indispensable, as it acts directly on the problem, helping us to strengthen and make our spine more flexible, providing stability and normal movement, correcting our posture and giving us an awareness and education in movement to safely carry out any activity in our daily lives, as well as in the practice of other sports.

In our centre we apply both therapies together, as they complement each other and allow us to achieve fantastic results.
