Scars arise as a physiological process in response to an alteration in the integrity of any of the tissues of which they are composed. They generally occur after the healing of a wound of traumatic, surgical or burn origin.
Physiotherapy can be effective in the treatment of scars from the beginning, when the tissue is more malleable, improving pain, skin elasticity, functionality or aesthetics. Untreated scars can lead to physical and functional problems such as: mobility limitations in superficial and deep tissue, joint limitations, vascular and nerve compression, hypersensitivity or pain.
Physiotherapy mainly aims to increase the vascularisation of the area to promote skin elasticity and prevent the formation of adhesions or fibrosis, which hinder the elastic capacity of the skin, restricting movement in that area and in other more distant areas.
Physiotherapy treatments for scarring
Among the most outstanding scar treatments we can highlight.
- Myofascial release techniques and massage. Z-shaped rubbing in opposite directions on both sides and along the length of the scar to peel off and give it elasticity. Frictions parallel to the scar line and on both sides, in opposite directions. The rolling pinch technique, trying to peel below the scar line. Providing a stimulus to restore sensitivity to the area.
- Diathermy. Radiofrequency (INDIBA). Helps functional recovery, not only of the musculoskeletal tissue but also of the skin, subcutaneous tissue and connective tissue of the whole area.
- Other apparatus. Laser, EPI (percutaneous intratissue electrolysis), ultrasound. They accelerate the processes of tissue metabolism and healing, reduce inflammation and bruising to promote proper healing.
- Manual instrumentation. By means of “hooks” using the technique of diacutaneous fibrolysis, cupping, dry needling, dry needling.
- Neuromuscular taping. Helps to soften the tissue and separate the skin planes.
We can also add work to stimulate sensitivity, avoid possible alterations and improve the function of the cutaneous receptors. Stimulating, with different objects to be identified, temperature, different textures or pressures, with the eyes open and then closed. All treatments will be focused on restoring the correct regeneration and realignment of fibres, elasticity, increased vascularisation in the area, the elimination of pain and the recovery of tissue mobility.
